Dizziness and nausea after appendectomy – is it a concern?

Question

Hello Doctor,

I had an appendectomy six days ago and have already been discharged from the hospital. On the second night after discharge, I experienced abdominal pain and went to the restroom. However, after using the toilet, I felt dizzy and nauseous. Doctor, is dizziness and nausea after an appendectomy a cause for concern? Thank you.

Answer

Hello,

Regarding your question, "Is dizziness and nausea after an appendectomy a concern?", I would like to provide the following explanation:

On postoperative day 8, experiencing abdominal pain, dizziness, and nausea after a bowel movement is considered unusual. Possible causes include:  Disruption of gut microbiota due to antibiotic treatment; Residual fluid or irritation in the rectal area.  If your abdominal pain worsens or you experience frequent bowel movements, you should visit a hospital for further evaluation to rule out postoperative complications.

If you have any further concerns about dizziness and nausea, you may visit a Vinmec Health System hospital for examination and consultation. Thank you for your trust and sending your question to Vinmec. Wish you good health.

Best regards
