Does rapid heartbeat with palpitations indicate hypertension?

Hello Doctor,

At a health check-up, my blood pressure was measured at 170/100. However, when I checked at home, it fluctuated around 120, 122/76, 74, and 77. During the check-up, my heart was beating fast, and I felt palpitations. Wearing a mask made me feel suffocated. So, doctor, does rapid heartbeat with palpitations indicate hypertension? What should I do? Thank you, doctor.

Hello,
Regarding the question, “Does rapid heartbeat with palpitations indicate hypertension?”, I respond as follows:

In some situations involving emotions such as palpitation, anger, or stress, blood pressure can physiologically increase to 140 – 170 mmHg. This is often accompanied by a rapid heartbeat and sensations of palpitations or pounding in the chest. However, once the emotion passes, blood pressure typically returns to normal, and this is not yet classified as hypertension.

To determine if you have hypertension, you can take the following steps:

Measure blood pressure at home using an electronic blood pressure monitor (arm cuff type). This is a simple method. You can ask the seller or someone experienced to guide you on how to use the device. You should measure multiple times throughout the day. They are morning, noon, and evening, when relaxed, and record the readings in a notebook. If at least two readings exceed 130/85 mmHg, you should consult a cardiologist.

Visit a cardiologist for examination and consultation. During the examination, the doctor may check your blood pressure or perform 24-hour Holter monitoring to confirm hypertension. The doctor may also request some blood tests and imaging diagnostics for further evaluation.

If you have further concerns about hypertension, you can visit a hospital within the Vinmec Healthcare System for a check-up and additional consultation. Thank you for trusting Vinmec and sending your question. Wishing you good health.

Best regards!
