How do your baby's 5 senses develop during pregnancy?

Knowing the development of the baby's 5 senses through each stage of pregnancy will help mothers understand how big the fetus has grown in the mother's body, fully developing in shape and other functions.

  • Touch begins from the 8th week of pregnancy: Touch is 1 of the 5 senses that will be developed right before the 8th week of pregnancy, the embryo begins to be sensitive to be touched. The baby can touch his face or suck his fingers, feel body parts and observe how his body moves in the mother's womb.
  • Sense of smell develops from the 11th week of pregnancy: From 11 to 15 weeks of age, the fetus's nose is just formed. Until now, scientists still do not believe that the fetus develops the sense of smell (1 of the baby's 5 senses), because they think that smell, air and breath are needed. However, according to a recent study, the nasal system includes at least four subsystems and the amniotic fluid surrounding the fetus can flow through the baby's mouth and nose, allowing the baby to smell the flavors in the amniotic fluid.
  • Taste develops from 13-15 weeks old: Of the baby's 5 senses, from 13 to 15 weeks old, the fetus's taste are complete like those of an adult, and the amniotic fluid surrounding the fetus smells strongly of foods such as curry, dill, garlic, onions, or other strong flavors from the mother's diet. Studies show that the fetus tends to swallow amniotic fluid that tastes sweet more than bitter and sour.
  • Hearing (one of the baby's 5 senses) begins at 18 weeks of pregnancy: The baby's ears begin to form at about 8 weeks old and are complete at about 24 weeks old. But around week 18, the inner ear bones and brain nerve endings have fully developed so that the baby can hear all the sounds such as the rhythmic beating of the mother's heart or the steady flow of blood through the umbilical cord.
  • Vision develops starting from week 26 of pregnancy: Of the 5 senses, vision develops last. The baby's eyelids remain tightly closed to wait for the retina to fully develop, until the baby is 26 weeks old, the baby's eyes open and even begin to blink! At birth, the baby can see well within a range of 8 to 12 inches (20-30 cm).

The mother's job is to eat well and rest well so that the fetus in the womb can develop healthily at each stage.
