Question:
Hello Doctor,
I have recently received my first HPV vaccine dose, but I have yet to complete the second and third doses. I am about to get married, so is it safe to engage in sexual activity? Also, how long after completing the HPV vaccination should I wait before trying to conceive? What contraceptive methods can I use that won't negatively impact my reproductive health in the future? Thank you!

Hello,
Regarding the question, “How long should you wait to become pregnant after receiving the HPV vaccine?” the doctor would like to provide the following answer:
Getting vaccinated against HPV is highly recommended for women aged 9 - 26 who have not yet engaged in sexual activity. The HPV vaccine not only helps prevent cervical cancer but also provides protection against genital warts and other HPV-related conditions.
There is no specific recommendation to abstain from sexual activity after receiving the HPV vaccine. However, it is advisable to use protection if engaging in sexual activity because the vaccine may not have produced sufficient antibodies to combat HPV at this stage, meaning there is still a risk of infection if you have unprotected intercourse. For pregnancy planning, it is recommended to wait 1–3 months after the final vaccine dose to ensure safety for both mother and baby.
There are several contraceptive options available, such as condoms, oral contraceptives, implants, and intrauterine devices. Each method may have different side effects, particularly hormonal methods or intrauterine devices. If you want to minimize side effects while also protecting against sexually transmitted infections, condoms are the preferred method of contraception.
If you have further concerns regarding HPV vaccination, you can visit a hospital within the Vinmec Healthcare System for further examination and consultation. Thank you for trusting and sending your question to Vinmec. Wishing you good health.
Sincerely.
