Guide to Using Prospan Cough Medicine: Syrup and Lozenges for Children

Prospan cough medicine has mucolytic, antispasmodic, and cough-relieving effects. Therefore, it is used for acute respiratory infections accompanied by cough and for symptomatic treatment in chronic bronchitis.

1. How Many Types of Prospan Cough Medicine Are Available

Currently, in the Vietnamese market, the Drug Administration has registered three different types of Prospan cough medicine:

These products are manufactured and distributed by Engelhard Arzneimittel GmbH & Co. KG, located at Herzbergstr. 3, 61138 Niederdorfelden, Germany.

2. Composition of Prospan Cough Medicine

Prospan contains dry extract of ivy leaf (Hederae helicis folii extractum siccum), extracted with 30% ethanol in a ratio of (5-7.5)/1, with varying concentrations depending on the formulation:

  • Lozenges: 26 mg dry extract per tablet
  • Syrup: 700 mg dry extract per 100 ml
  • Oral Solution: 35 mg dry extract per 5 ml

Additionally, Prospan contains excipients specific to each dosage form.

3. Target Users for Prospan Cough Medicine

Since Prospan has mucolytic, antispasmodic, and cough-relieving properties, it is used for acute respiratory infections with cough and for symptomatic treatment of chronic bronchitis.

Depending on the formulation, the manufacturer specifies target users as follows:

  • Prospan Lozenges and Oral Solution: Suitable for children aged 6 years and older, as well as adults.
  • Prospan Syrup: Suitable for infants, children, adolescents and adults.

4. Instructions for Using Prospan Cough Medicine

Prospan Syrup:

Infants and young children: 2.5 ml, three times per day.

School-aged children and adolescents: 5 ml, three times per day.

Adults: 5 – 7 ml, three times per day.

Note: Shake the bottle well before use.

Prospan Lozenges:

  • Suck the lozenge slowly in the mouth; do not take while lying down.
  • Adults and children aged 12 years and older: 1 lozenge, four times per day.
  • Children aged 6-11 years: 1 lozenge, twice per day.

Prospan Oral Solution:

  • Children aged 6-11 years: 1 sachet (5 ml), twice per day.
  • Children over 12 years old and adults: 1 sachet (5 ml), three times per day.

5. Precautions When Using Prospan Cough Medicine

Recommended duration of use: Depending on symptom severity, Prospan should be used for at least one week, even in cases of mild respiratory infections. To ensure successful treatment, continue for 2-3 days after symptoms have resolved. If persistent cough, difficulty breathing, fever, or sputum with pus or blood occurs, consult a doctor immediately.

Contraindications: Contains sorbitol, so it is not recommended for individuals with fructose intolerance.

Pregnant and breastfeeding women should only use Prospan under the guidance and prescription of a physician.
