Is a hard lump at the tooth extraction site a cause for concern?

Question ‌

I had a decayed tooth treated 4 years ago with a root canal and filling. However, 3 months later, the filling broke. Two months ago, it hurt again, and I had it extracted. I was given a local anesthetic. A week after the extraction, I noticed a hard lump under my jaw at the extraction site, which moves when I press on it. Could this be an infection after tooth extraction? Until now, the wound has healed, but the lump is still there. Can you tell me if it's okay to have a hard lump at the site of a tooth extraction? Please advise.

Answer

Hello,

Since your tooth extraction two months ago, the lump has not disappeared. You should visit a healthcare facility for an evaluation, including an ultrasound of the lump.. If the lump is a reactive lymph node caused by post-extraction inflammation, it typically resolves within three months.. You can have an ultrasound and follow-up appointments with your doctor, and you should also avoid touching the lump too much, as this can stimulate its growth

You can visit any facility of Vinmec Healthcare System nationwide to get advice and detailed guidance from experienced doctors. Thank you for your question regarding concerns about a hard lump at the tooth extraction site.

Sincerely!
