Understanding Terpin-codein cough medication

Table of content
Terpin-Codein is a commonly used medication that helps to loosen mucus and reduce coughing. Below, you'll find useful information about its uses, dosage, and important precautions when taking Terpin-Codein cough medication.

1. What is Terpin-codein?

Terpin-Codein belongs to the category of cough and cold medications. This medication contains the active ingredients Terpin hydrate and Codeine phosphate. Terpin hydrate works by activating mucus in the bronchial tubes, helping to loosen phlegm and making it easier for the cilia in the bronchial epithelium to expel it. Codeine is a derivative of morphine and acts by inhibiting the respiratory center, providing pain relief, inducing sleep, and reducing coughing. Therefore, Terpin-Codein is used to relieve cough and loosen phlegm. Additionally, it is used to treat conditions like sore throat, bronchitis, laryngotracheitis, and the common cold. The medication is formulated as tablets, typically packaged in boxes containing 10 blister packs, each with 10 tablets.

2. Dosage of Terpin-Codein

For adults: Take 1-2 tablets per dose, 2-3 times a day. Do not use Terpin-Codein cough medication for more than 10 days without a doctor's directive.

5. Some precautions when using Terpin-Codein

5.1. Precautions before using Terpin-Codein

Before taking Terpin-Codein, inform your doctor or pharmacist if:

•    You are pregnant or breastfeeding. It is best to avoid using this medication during pregnancy and breastfeeding unless specifically directed by a doctor.
•    You are allergic to any ingredients in Terpin-Codein cough medication.
•    You plan to use the medication for children under 30 months old or under 18 years old who have recently had their tonsils removed and/or adenoidectomy.
•    You plan to use the medication for children with a history of febrile seizures or epilepsy.
•    You have or have ever had respiratory conditions such as respiratory failure or asthma-related cough.
•    Codeine should only be used at the lowest dose and for the shortest duration necessary to achieve the desired effect.
•    Due to the risk of respiratory depression, codeine-containing medications should only be used for acute moderate pain relief in children over 12 years old when other pain relievers like ibuprofen and paracetamol are ineffective.
•    Codeine should not be used for children with respiratory issues (e.g., difficulty breathing or wheezing during sleep).
•    Terpin-Codein causes drowsiness, so caution is needed when used by drivers or machine operators.
•    Exercise caution when using Terpin-Codein if you have increased intracranial pressure.

5.2. Overdose

In case of an emergency or overdose, immediately go to a medical facility for prompt assistance.

Additionally, remember to note the name of the medication or bring along any medications you have taken, including both prescription and over-the-counter drugs.

5.3. Missed dose

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is close to the time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with the next dose at the scheduled time. Do not take a double dose to make up for the missed one.

5.4. Drug interactions

When using Terpin-Codein concurrently with other medications, the effectiveness of these drugs may be altered, increasing the risk of side effects or preventing the medications from working as intended. Consult your doctor to evaluate the combination of medications. Your doctor will provide advice on how to prevent and minimize drug interactions.

Medications that may interact with Terpin-Codein include:

•    Central nervous system depressant antidepressants can increase the risk of higher depression;
•    Morphine group drugs: these can cause respiratory depression;
•    Other cough medications: should not be combined with Terpin-Codein® as it can lead to diluted or dry phlegm;
•    Alcohol and alcoholic beverages should be avoided while using Terpin-Codein as it can enhance the sedative effects of the medication.

5.5. Storage

You should store Terpin-Codein at temperatures below 30 °C in a dry place with humidity not exceeding 70% and away from direct sunlight. Do not store it in the bathroom or the freezer. Keep in mind that each medication may have different storage instructions, so it is important to read the storage guidelines on the packaging or consult a pharmacist. Keep the medication out of reach of children and pets.
