Otrivin nasal drops are used to relieve nasal congestion in children and help clear mucus. Safe usage requires a doctor's consultation. Parents should avoid self-prescribing and administering the medication without a doctor's prescription.
1. What is Otrivin nasal spray?
Otrivin is a pediatric nasal drop used for sinus irritation caused by various factors such as weather changes or the common cold. The active ingredient, Xylometazoline, is formulated in drop and solution forms at concentrations of 0.1% and 0.05%.
Otrivin nasal drops for children are produced to help alleviate upper respiratory symptoms. By constricting blood vessels, Otrivin reduces nasal swelling and congestion, helping infants and young children breathe more easily when they have a stuffy nose or allergies.
This medication can be indicated for children with nasal congestion, with the following dosage:
- Otrivin nasal drops 0.05%: Indicated for infants and children up to 6 years old. Administer 1 to 2 drops per nostril, 1 to 2 times per day.
- Otrivin nasal drops 0.1%: Indicated for children over 6 years old. Administer 2 to 3 drops per nostril, 3 to 4 times per day.
- Otrivin nasal spray 0.1%: Indicated for children over 6 years old. Administer 1 spray per nostril, up to 4 times per day as needed.
2. Precautions for using Otrivin nasal spray in children
Otrivin nasal spray is a supportive treatment, not a replacement for medical treatment. Therefore, when taking it as a nasal spray or drops for children, parents should be aware of the following:
- Do not use Otrivin nasal spray in children who are hypersensitive to any of its ingredients, have undergone transsphenoidal hypophysectomy, epidural surgery, or have conditions such as dry rhinitis, atrophic rhinitis, or narrow-angle glaucoma.
- This nasal spray is for nasal use only, ot be administered orally.
- If it accidentally enters the eyes, rinse immediately with water.
- Parents should only use Otrivin to alleviate symptoms of a runny or congested nose in children. If nasal inflammation is severe, consult a doctor for safe and effective treatment.
- Discontinue the medication and contact a doctor immediately if your child experiences symptoms like blurred vision, headache, dizziness, anxiety, irregular heartbeat, confusion, wheezing, or difficulty breathing.
- Otrivin nasal drops help relieve nasal congestion and assist in mucus clearance. However, its use should be guided by a doctor’s consultation and prescription, especially in children. Parents should not administer it without a doctor’s prescription.
