Should mild lower abdominal pain at 5 months pregnant be a concern?

Question

Dear Doctor,

I am currently 5-week pregnant, sometimes I experience mild lower abdominal pain, similar to menstrual cramps. I went to Vinmec for a check-up, and the doctor advised me to only monitor the symptoms at home. However, I am still worried because the symptoms of pain and abdominal discomfort have persisted for 10 days without improvement. Since my follow-up appointment is not yet due, I have not sought further medical attention. Could you kindly advise whether mild lower abdominal pain at 5 months of pregnancy is a cause for concern? Thank you, doctor.

Answer

Dear Sir/Madam,

Regarding your question, “Should mild lower abdominal pain at 5 months pregnant be a concern?”, here is my response:

In the early stages of pregnancy, as the embryo implants into the uterine lining, you may experience mild lower abdominal pain and slight vaginal spotting. Once implantation is complete, these symptoms typically subside.

However, abdominal pain during early pregnancy can also arise from other causes, such as: Constipation, urinary tract infections, ligament stretching, threatened miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy, etc.

If your lower abdominal pain is accompanied by any of the following symptoms, you should visit an obstetrician-gynecologist immediately:

  • Severe, cramping abdominal pain with heavy clotted bleeding.
  • Progressive abdominal pain.
  • Digestive disorders, fatigue, dizziness, or fainting.
  • Frequent urination, painful urination, or blood in the urine.

If you have further questions about mild lower abdominal pain at 5 months of pregnancy, you can visit a hospital in the Vinmec Healthcare System for an examination and consultation. Thank you for trusting and sending your question to Vinmec. Wishing you good health.

Best regards!
