Sensitive to cold water, sore throat, is it a sign of tonsillitis?
Question:
Hello, Doctor! My throat often becomes sensitive to cold water. Whenever I drink cool or cold water, my throat becomes dry and sore, and it feels like there's phlegm. I also feel sluggish, weak, and as if I am about to have a fever. Therefore, I can no longer drink cool or cold water.
So, doctor, could sensitivity to cold water and throat pain be signs of tonsillitis? Do I need to have my tonsils removed?

Answer:
Hello! Cold water is just a stimulating factor. When your throat's condition is not good, such as having allergies, chronic pharyngitis, or chronic tonsillitis, drinking cold water can make the tissues in your throat easily irritated and swollen. Opportunistic bacteria may infiltrate the tissues in the throat, including the palatine tonsils, lingual tonsils, and lymphoid follicles in the back of the throat, causing throat symptoms and triggering an immune response, making you feel chills and fatigue.
Tonsillectomy should only be performed based on a doctor's recommendation.
