Current Liver Cyst Size is 4x5cm – Is it Concerning?

Question

Hello, doctor! I’d like to ask about liver cysts. What size is considered large? Is a 4x5cm cyst considered large? I hope you can help clarify. Thank you, doctor.

Answer

Hello! A liver cyst is a fluid-filled cavity within the liver, considered a benign tumor and not cancerous. In some cases, large cysts can contain 1–2 liters of fluid. Larger cysts may rupture and cause bleeding, and mobile cysts may twist. Generally, liver cysts are not overly dangerous. Upon diagnosis, tests should be conducted to rule out parasites, which can be treated with antibiotics. When the liver cyst is small (less than 4cm), no treatment is needed. When the liver cyst is large (over 4cm) you need to see a doctor for appropriate treatment. Laparoscopic surgery is a common, simple, and effective method widely used for treating liver cysts. In addition, a drainage procedure can also be considered.
