Aminosteril is primarily indicated for the treatment and prophylaxis of plasma protein deficiencies. Before using Aminosteril, patients should carefully consult their doctor's recommendations regarding the benefits and risks of using this medication, especially for those with kidney failure, congestive heart failure, pregnant women, etc.
1. What is Aminosteril?
Aminosteril is classified as a fluid and electrolyte replacement solution with acid-base balancing properties. The product is available as an intravenous infusion in two primary formulations: Aminosteril 10 (250ml) and Aminosteril n-hepa 8 (500ml). Aminosteril is manufactured by Fresenius Kabi Bidiphar Joint Stock Company – Vietnam. The infusion contains a mixture of amino acids, providing essential amino acid supplementation in cases of deficiency.
2. Indications and contraindications of Aminosteril
2.1. Indications of Aminosteril
Aminosteril 10 and Aminosteril n-hepa 8 are commonly indicated for the following conditions:
- Treatment and prevention of protein deficiency due to burns, post-surgery, hemorrhage, mild/benign gastroduodenal diseases, cancer, malnutrition, cystic fibrosis, short bowel syndrome, protein malabsorption due to the digestive tract or Crohn's disease.
- Parenteral nutrition in preterm and neonatal infants. Aminosteril is particularly indicated for patients experiencing protein losses exceeding 15g/day and inadequate oral intake lasting more than 1 week
2.2. Contraindications of Aminosteril
Aminosteril is contraindicated in the following conditions:
- It is absolutely contraindicated in patients presenting with cardiovascular instability, life-threatening conditions (e.g., cardiogenic shock), or tissue hypoxia.
- Relative contraindication exists for patients with amino acid metabolism disorders.
3. Dosage and administration of Aminosteril
3.1. Aminosteril dosage
The following are the recommended dosages for cases requiring amino acid supplementation with Aminosteril infusion:
- Adults: Infuse from 10 – 20mL/kg/day, equivalent to 1 – 2g of amino acids/kg/day.
- Children aged 3 – 5 years: Infuse 15mL/kg/day, equivalent to 1.5g of amino acids/kg/day.
- Children aged 6 – 14 years: Infuse 10mL/kg/day, equivalent to 1g of amino acids/kg/day. Maximum infusion rate 1mL/kg/hour, equivalent to 0.1g/kg/hour.
- Parenteral nutrition: The total Aminosteril infusion dose should not exceed 40mL/kg/day.
3.2. Administration of Aminosteril
Before using Aminosteril, patients should engage in a thorough consultation with their physician to receive comprehensive guidance on proper and safe administration. Aminosteril is administered via slow intravenous infusion, and close monitoring by a specialist is essential to mitigate the risk of adverse reactions.
4. Adverse effects of Aminosteril
During Aminosteril administration, patients may experience the following adverse reactions:
- Nausea, vomiting.
- Chest pain.
- Palpitations.
- Metabolic acidosis associated with rapid or high-volume Aminosteril infusions.
- Skin rash (infrequent).
- Chill.
- Headache.
- Fever.
- Venous pain.
When noticing any suspicious symptoms after using Aminosteril, patients should immediately inform the medical staff or specialist for prompt management. Early detection and treatment of Aminosteril's side effects will significantly help patients prevent the risk of dangerous complications or life-threatening reactions.
5. Important precautions during Aminosteril administration
5.1. What precautions should be taken when using Aminosteril?
Before deciding to use Aminosteril infusion, patients should inform their specialist doctor if they have the following conditions:
- Being allergic or hypersensitive to any ingredient in Aminosteril.
- Having any health conditions, from mild to severe.
- Having allergies to food, dyes, chemicals, or any animal-relatd agents (e.g., fur).
- Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
In addition, the following subjects should also be cautious when using Aminosteril, including:
- Patients with congestive heart failure.
- Individuals with severe renal failure.
- Individuals with progressive/severe hepatic impairment.
- Patients with hyperkalemia or hypernatremia.
5.2. Precautions for Aminosteril use in special populations
Currently, there are limited data from controlled studies to definitively establish the risks associated with Aminosteril use in patients who are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or lactating. It is strongly advised that these patients engage in a comprehensive consultation with their healthcare provider prior to initiating Aminosteril infusion to carefully assess the potential benefits and risks to both the pregnancy and the developing neonate.
Based on expert recommendations, Aminosteril administration in pregnant and lactating individuals should be reserved for situations where the anticipated benefits clearly outweigh the potential risks to the mother and infant.
Individuals whose work requires high concentration, such as driving or operating machinery, caution should be exercised when using Aminosteril. This is because some side effects of Aminosteril may affect the mental state and the ability to control situations of these individuals.
5.2. Drug interactions of Aminosteril
The concomitant administration of Aminosteril with certain other medications may potentiate the risk of drug-drug interactions. This interaction can lead to two cases: one is to worsen the side effects of the drug, and the other is to reduce the effectiveness of other drugs.
To ensure optimal effectiveness and reduce the risk of interactions during Aminosteril infusion, patients should inform their doctor about all other medications, health protection products, herbs, or vitamin supplements they are currently using. The doctor may make recommendations to adjust the dose or replace other more suitable drugs for the patient to minimize the risk of drug interactions.
6. Instructions for storing Aminosteril
The expiry date of Aminosteril is 36 months from the manufacturing date, which is indicated on the product packaging. The product should be stored in a dry environment, protected from direct sunlight and areas of high humidity such as bathrooms. The optimal storage temperature is below 30°C. It is recommended to store the product in a secure location, out of reach of children and pets.
