1. What is Auricularum?

Auricularum is a drug manufactured by Laboratoires Grimberg Pharmaceutical Company of France. The drug is packaged in a box of a powder bottle and a 10ml solvent tube. When used, the patient mixes the powder bottle and the solvent to create a suspension for ear drops.

Ingredients of the drug include:

Each bottle of powder contains:

• Oxytetracycline hydrochlorld 100mg.
• Polymyxin B sulfate 12.3mg.
• Nystatin 1,000,000IU.
• Dexamethasone sodium phosphate 10mg.
• Excipients q.s. 326mg.

Each solvent tube contains:

• Sodium chloride 90mg.
• Purified water to 10ml.

2. Effects of Auricularum

The effects of the ingredients include:

• Dexamethasone sodium phosphate is essentially a synthetic glucocorticoid, so it has a strong anti-inflammatory effect.
• Nystatin is a broad-spectrum antifungal drug and is effective against most yeasts, filamentous fungi and many other fungal agents that cause diseases in the ear canal.
• Oxytetracycline hydrochlorld and Polymyxin B sulfate are topical antibiotics. These two antibiotics combine to increase the antibacterial spectrum and are effective against both Gram-positive (+) and Gram-negative bacteria (-) (these are common infectious agents in the external ear canal and middle ear).

3. Indications of Auricularum

The drug is indicated for the following cases:

• Patients with otitis externa caused by bacteria and/or fungi.
• Chronic otitis media.
• ​​Used to dry and clean secretions in the ear canal before ear surgery.
• Can be used after surgery involving perforation of the petrous-mastoid bone and/or tympanic membrane reconstruction.

4. How to use Auricularum

How to use Auricularum as follows:

Auricularum is used for ear drops and should not be injected or taken orally. When using, avoid direct contact between the bottle stopper and the ear or finger due to the risk of infection.

How to mix the medicine before use:

• Place the bottle of powder medicine upright with the medicine dropper facing up and push the powder towards the bottom of the bottle.
• Open the bottle containing the powder medicine, then open the bottle stopper containing the solvent and add the solvent to the bottle containing the powder medicine.
• Close the bottle stopper containing the medicine and start shaking well to dissolve the medicine.
• Drop the medicine into the ear, it is important to shake well before each drop.
• The medicine after mixing can be used within 8 days. Store the medicine at the temperature in the refrigerator compartment.

How to drop:

• Each time we take it from the refrigerator, we should warm the medicine bottle by holding or rolling the medicine bottle in the palm of our hand, then shake well before dropping.
• Tilt your head toward the unaffected ear and drop the medicine into the affected ear.
•To let the drops flow deep into the ear, pull the earlobe several times. 
• Keep the same position and wait 5 minutes for the medicine to take effect. When your head is straight, absorb and wipe away the drops that flow out.
• Note that you need to close the cap tightly after each use.
After finishing the course of treatment, if there is any remaining medicine, it must be discarded and not reused for the next time or for another patient.

5. Dosage of Auricularum

As prescribed by your doctor or refer to the following dosage:

• Drop 1 - 2 times/day, 5 - 10 drops each time.
• Duration of treatment: Usually 7 days, can be up to 15 days for fungal infections. If after 10 - 15 days the symptoms persist, the disease and
treatment method need to be re-evaluated.
• Can be combined with antibiotics.

How to handle missed doses and overdoses

When you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. Skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next dose, take the next dose as planned. Do not double the dose.

Overdose:

• There have been no reports of overdose symptoms.
• If you accidentally overdose and experience serious side effects, go to a medical center immediately for timely treatment.

6. Contraindications for using Auricularum

Auricularum should not be used in the following cases:

• People who are hypersensitive to any ingredient of the drug
• Perforated eardrum due to infection or trauma.
The drug can cause some of the following side effects:
• Burning sensation or local reactions such as allergies, or irritation.
• Feeling dizzy.
• Brown powder residue remaining inside the ear canal.

If you experience any side effects, you should immediately notify your doctor or pharmacist for timely treatment.

Drug interactions: Currently, there are no records of Auricularum interacting with other drugs.

To ensure safety and effectiveness, tell your doctor about all other ear medications and diseases you are suffering from.

7. Notes when using the drug and how to store it

• Pregnant women: Only use this drug for pregnant women when necessary and consult your doctor.
• Breastfeeding mothers: Can be used for breastfeeding women.
• People who drive and operate machinery: Does not affect the ability to drive and operate machinery.

Other special notes:
• The eardrum must be checked before prescribing.
• The drug contains Oxytetracycline: an antibiotic of the Cyclin family, which can damage the teeth of children under 8 years old and is sensitive to light. However, the powder form may be less common but not eliminated.
• Corticoids do not prevent allergic reactions to antibiotics, but help reduce clinical symptoms.
• Stop taking the drug immediately if there are signs such as skin rash or any symptoms of local or systemic hypersensitivity.
• This drug contains Dexamethasone sodium phosphate, which causes positive results when testing for stimulants (doping). Use the drug with caution in athletes.

Pay special attention to people wearing hearing aids because it reduces the effectiveness of the device due to side effects. Therefore, the outer ear canal should be cleaned to limit the presence of brown powder residue inside.

8. Conditions for storing Auricularum

To ensure effective use and avoid unwanted side effects, Auricularum should be stored in the following conditions:

• Temperature below 30 degrees Celsius.
• Avoid light.
• Keep out of sight and reach of children.
• Do not use after the expiry date printed on the package.
