1. Uses of Maxgel anti-itch cream
- Maxgel is formulated as a topical cream containing a combination of three active ingredients: betamethasone, gentamicin, and clotrimazole. Betamethasone is a corticosteroid with anti-inflammatory and antipruritic effects.
- Gentamicin, an aminoglycoside antibiotic with a broad-spectrum antibacterial effect, has broad-spectrum activity against common bacterial pathogens in skin infections.
- Clotrimazole is a synthetic imidazole derivative with broad-spectrum antifungal activity, capable of inhibiting most pathogenic fungi in humans.
Maxgel is indicated for the treatment of corticosteroid-responsive dermatitis complicated by secondary infection, eczema, dermatitis, excoriation, intertrigo, and fungal skin infections.
2. Administration of Maxgel 10g
2.1 Administration of Maxgel 10g
Wash the affected area with warm saline solusion, dry it completely, and gently apply a thin layer of the cream from the outside inwards.
2.2 Dosage of Maxgel 10g
The patient applies the medication 2 to 3 times daily until clinical improvement is observed. Then, continue maintenance treatment by applying once daily.
For psoriasis, where thickened plaques appear on the elbows and knees, the treated area should be covered after the first application to enhance treatment efficacy. Subsequent applications do not require occlusion.
2.3 Management of Maxgel 10g overdose
Patients should not exceed the prescribed dosage of Maxgel, as excessive use does not enhance symptom relief but may lead to toxicity or serious adverse effects.
If you suspect an overdose of Maxgel, you need to seek emergency medical care at the nearest hospital. Bring the medication box, packaging, or label to assist healthcare providers with necessary information. Do not share your medication with others, even if they have similar symptoms.
3. Adverse effects of Maxgel cream
Some adverse effects may occur when taking Maxgel topical cream. Common corticosteroid-related adverse effect is skin atrophy (including stretch marks, skin thinning, and dilation of superficial blood vessels), particularly with prolonged use over extensive areas.
The medication may be absorbed through the skin, potentially leading to hypercortisolism, especially when applied to thin skin areas or used in children.
4. Contraindications for Maxgel:
Maxgel is contraindicated in the following cases:
- Patients with hypersensitivity to any of the drug’s components.
- Patients with acne (both acne vulgaris and rosacea).
- Patients with perioral dermatitis or viral infections (such as herpes simplex or varicella).
- Women in the first trimester of pregnancy, breastfeeding, and children under one year of age.
- Patients have an ear infection or fungal infection with a perforated eardrum.
5. Precautions when taking Maxgel
- When applying the medication, take care to avoid contact with the eyes. Facial skin is more atrophic than other areas, leading to dark-colored scars.
- Maxgel is contraindicated for extensive bacterial infections due to the potential for transdermal absorption, leading to toxicity; systemic antibiotic treatment is required instead.
- If symptoms do not improve after seven days of use, an alternative treatment should be prescribed in combination with systemic treatment, as clotrimazole may mask signs of infection.
- Driving and operating machinery: Maxgel does not impair alertness or affect the ability to drive or operate machinery.
- Pregnant women: The safety of this medication during pregnancy has not been established. It is contraindicated if the benefits outweigh the risks. Consult a doctor before taking.
- Breastfeeding women: It is unknown whether Maxgel is excreted in breast milk. The benefits for the mother should be weighed against potential risks for the infant.
- Special populations (elderly, children, individuals with allergies): Maxgel is contraindicated in children under one year of age.
Maxgel 10g topical cream is indicated for the treatment of dermatophytic and bacterial skin infections. To optimize treatment outcomes and reduce the risk of adverse effects, patients must follow the prescribed regimen as directed by their doctor or clinical pharmacist.
