Table of content

Tinidazole 500mg belongs to a group of drugs used to treat vaginal infections, amoebiasis, and other bacterial infections.  Tinidazole is often prescribed for anaerobic infections of the digestive tract, giardiasis, and the prevention of postoperative anaerobic infections.  What are the effects of tinidazole?

1. Uses of Tinidazole

What is Tinidazole? Tinidazole is formulated with a 500 mg content, belonging to the group of drugs that act on the vagina, amoebicidal drugs, and other antibiotics. Tinidazole 500 mg is effective in treating anaerobic infections of the digestive tract, gynecological, soft tissue, and skin; giardiasis, trichomoniasis, intestinal and hepatic amoebic infections; and in preventing postoperative anaerobic infections.

In addition, some other effects of the drug are not listed on the approved drug label. Some doctors may prescribe tinidazole; therefore, consult your doctor before taking the drug.

2. How to use Tinidazole

What is the effect of tinidazole? Tinidazole 500 mg is prepared as film-coated tablets. The dosage depends on the individual and the condition:

•    The usual adult dose for anaerobic infections: 2 grams on the first day, then 1 gram daily for the following days.  Treatment is for 5–6 days.
•    The usual adult dose for trichomonas or giardia infection: a single 2-gram dose.
•    The usual adult dose for amoebic infection: 2 grams daily for 3 days.
•    Usual adult dose for postoperative infection prevention: a single 2-gram dose 12 hours before surgery.
•    For children with trichomonas infection, the usual dose is 50–70 mg/kg.
•    The usual dose for children with giardia infection is a single 50–70 mg/kg dose.
•    The usual dose for children with amoebic infection is 50–60 mg/kg daily for 3 days.

The medication may be taken with or without food.  To reduce stomach irritation, take it with food and swallow the  whole tablet with a full glass of water. For young children, use syrup or crush the tablet and dissolve it in water. Use tinidazole exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not overdose, underdose, or use it for longer than prescribed.

Use tinidazole regularly for optimal benefit. Stop taking the medication if you experience any new or unusual symptoms or if your condition does not improve after 7 days. Do not use the medication for extended periods. This will not improve your condition and increases the risk of adverse effects.

3. Unwanted effects when using tinidazole

Tinidazole 500 mg can cause some unwanted side effects, which are more common if the medicine is taken on an empty stomach. Symptoms may include:

•    Nausea
•    Loss of appetite
•    Diarrhea
•    Metallic taste in the mouth
•    Itching
•    Hives
•    Angioedema
•    Headache
•    Dizziness
•    Granulocytopenia

Before prescribing the medicine, the doctor always considers the benefits and effectiveness of tinidazole. Unwanted effects can still occur when using tinidazole. Therefore, if unusual symptoms occur, especially severe allergic reactions with accompanying signs such as severe dizziness, difficulty breathing, rash, swelling, or itching of the face, throat, tongue, etc., the patient should immediately notify the doctor or nurse for immediate medical intervention.

4. Notes on Tinidazole Use

Some notes when using tinidazole include:

•    Report any history of allergy to tinidazole or other allergies. Tinidazole may contain inactive ingredients that can cause allergic reactions or other serious problems.
•    Report all medications you are taking, including prescription and nonprescription drugs, herbs, and supplements.
•    Tinidazole is contraindicated in patients with a history of hypersensitivity to any ingredient in the drug.
•    Use with caution in patients with central or peripheral nervous system diseases.
•    It is contraindicated in patients with blood disorders, a history of acute porphyria, or organic neurological disease.
•    Tinidazole 500 mg should not be used by pregnant or breastfeeding women, especially during the first trimester.

If you miss a dose of tinidazole, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule. Do not take more medication than prescribed.  Tinidazole overdose can cause serious symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, difficulty breathing, and fainting.

5. Drug interactions

Drug interactions can decrease the effectiveness of tinidazole or increase the risk of unwanted side effects. Tell your doctor about all other medications you are taking, including nonprescription drugs, vitamins, prescription drugs, and herbal products. Do not start, stop, or change the dosage of any medicine without your doctor's approval.

6. How to store Tinidazole?

Store tinidazole at room temperature, away from light and moisture. Do not store it in damp places, in the freezer, or near heat and open flames. Different medications require different storage methods; read the package instructions carefully or ask your pharmacist. Keep tinidazole out of reach of children and pets.  Discard expired or damaged medication properly. Do not dispose of tinidazole in the environment (e.g., water pipes or toilets) unless instructed to do so. Consult your waste disposal company or pharmacist for proper disposal advice to protect the environment.

Tinidazole 500 mg is effective in treating anaerobic infections of the digestive tract, gynecological, soft tissue, and skin; giardiasis; trichomoniasis; intestinal and liver amoebic infections; and in preventing postoperative anaerobic infections.
