Indications of Gastrogel medication

Gastrogel is commonly indicated for the treatment of gastric and duodenal ulcers. The method of administration and dosage of each type of Gastrogel may vary according to the patient's health status and condition.  

1. Indications of Gastrogel medication  

Currently, there are two types of Gastrogel available on the market:  

  • Gastrogel tablets produced by Pharmedic Pharmaceutical Joint Stock Company - Vietnam;
  • Liquid Gastrogel, an antacid produced by Aspen Pharma - Australia.  

The chewable tablet form of Gastrogel contains the following ingredients:  

  • Finely ground cuttlefish bone;  
  • Borneol powder;  
  • Finely powdered refined alum;  
  • Licorice extract.  

The components are effective in nourishment, promoting ulcer healing, anti-inflammatory, and pain relief.  

The main ingredient in the liquid Gastrogel is Aluminium Hydroxide. This active substance is utilized in the treatment, management, prevention, and improvement of gastrointestinal conditions such as acid reflux or gastroesophageal reflux disease.  

The indications for Gastrogel tablets are as follows:  

  • Gastric ulcers;  
  • Duodenal ulcers;  
  • Excess gastric acid secretion.  

The indications for liquid Gastrogel are:  

  • Heartburn, acid reflux, bloating;  
  • Stomach pain;  
  • Gastric and duodenal ulcers;  
  • Improving appetite.  

Contraindications for Gastrogel tablets include:  

  • Individuals hypersensitive to any component of the medication;  
  • Patients with renal insufficiency;  
  • Patients with nephrolithiasis;  
  • Patients with liver insufficiency;  
  • Patients with hyposecretory gastric ulcers.  

Contraindications for liquid Gastrogel include:  

  • Individuals with allergies or hypersensitivity to any components of the medication;
  • Individuals with a history of allergic reactions to Aluminium Hydroxide.  

2. Dosage and administration of Gastrogel medication  

Gastrogel tablets are administered orally and should be chewed thoroughly before swallowing, followed by rinsing the mouth with water. It is recommended to take Gastrogel after meals for optimal efficacy.  

The usual dosage for Gastrogel tablets is: 2 tablets per dose, 3 times per day.  

Liquid Gastrogel should be taken directly with water and not combined with other liquids unless directed by a qualified physician.  

The common dosage for liquid Gastrogel is 10-20 ml per administration, taken 30 minutes before meals or before bedtime.  

For infants, children, and pregnant or breastfeeding women, it is imperative to consult a medical professional prior to use. 

3. Adverse effects of Gastrogel medication  

When using Gastrogel tablets, patients may experience side effects such as:  

In the event of these side effects, increasing water intake and consuming fiber-rich foods may alleviate symptoms.  

Potential side effects associated with liquid Gastrogel include:  

  • Dehydration;  
  • Gastric hemorrhage;  
  • Tachycardia;  
  • Hypertension;  
  • Increased frequency of urination or urinary difficulty, dysuria;  
  • Fatigue, loss of consciousness, loss of motor control in limbs.  

If any adverse effects occur during the use of the medication, it is essential to notify a physician immediately for timely intervention. 

4. Interactions with Gastrogel medication  

Some medications and substances that may interact with liquid Gastrogel include:  

  • Ascorbic acid;  
  • Bisphosphonate derivatives;  
  • Cephalosporins;  
  • Citrate;  
  • Corticosteroids;  
  • Imidazole antifungal agents.  

In summary, both forms of Gastrogel are indicated for the treatment of gastric and duodenal ulcers. The medication may cause certain side effects; thus, it should be used strictly according to the physician's recommendations.
