What is Pantonix 40?

Pantonix 40 contains 40mg of the active ingredient pantoprazole. It is used to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease or peptic ulcers caused by H. pylori bacteria.

1. What is Pantonix 40 medication?

Pantonix is classified as a PPI containing 40mg of pantoprazole as its active pharmaceutical ingredient. This agent exerts its therapeutic effect by inhibiting gastric acid secretion, with the degree of inhibition being dose-dependent and affecting both basal and stimulated acid output. Pantoprazole can suppress acid production regardless of the stimulus.

Pantonix 40 is formulated as enteric-coated tablets and is used to treat the following conditions:

  • Gastroesophageal reflux disease, moderate and severe reflux esophagitis;
  • In combination with antibiotics to eradicate H.pylori bacteria, reducing the recurrence of duodenal and gastric ulcers caused by this bacteria;
  • Ulcers of the digestive tract and prevention of ulcers caused by the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs;
  • Pathological acid hypersecretion in Zollinger-Ellison syndrome and other conditions.

2. Administration and dosage of Pantonix 400mg

Pantonix 40mg is taken orally, by swallowing the whole tablet, without chewing it. The usual dose is 20-40mg once a day, treatment duration is usually 4 weeks or can be extended up to 8 weeks. However, the dosage is adjusted depending on the patient's clinical condition, specifically as follows:

  • In combination with antibiotics to treat stomach ulcers caused by H.pylori bacteria: Pantonix 40mg/time + 1000 Amoxicillin/time + 500mg Clarithromycin/time; or Pantonix 40mg/time + 1000 Amoxicillin/time + 500mg Metronidazole/time;  or Pantonix 40mg/time + 500 Clarithromycin/time + 500mg Metronidazole/time; each taken twice a day, in the morning and evening. Note that Pantonix 40mg should be taken before dinner, treatment duration is 7 days and can be extended up to 14 days
  • Gastric ulcer, reflux esophagitis: Pantonix 40mg/time/day or the dose can be doubled if the patient does not respond to other treatment methods. The treatment duration is 4 weeks and can be extended for another 4 weeks if indicated
  • Duodenal ulcer: Pantonix 40mg/time/day or can be doubled if the patient does not respond to other treatment methods. The treatment duration is 2 weeks and can be extended for another 2 weeks if not cured.
  • Zollinger-Ellison syndrome and other pathological acid hypersecretion: Pantonix 40mg/time, 2 times/day if long-term treatment is needed. The dosage can be increased or decreased depending on the measured amount of gastric acid secreted. The dose can be temporarily increased up to 160mg, but not recommended for prolonged periods.
  • Patients with severe liver failure: 1/2 tablet of Pantonix 40mg/time, during treatment, liver enzymes need to be monitored, if increased, treatment with Pantonix 40mg should be discontinued.
  • Elderly, patients with renal failure: Do not exceed Pantonix 40mg/time/day, dose reduction is not recommended. Except for the case of using it to treat H.pylori bacteria, which is Pantonix 40mg/time and used 2 times/day, used for 7 days.

3. Side effects of Pantonix 40

Pantonix 40 may cause some adverse effects with the following frequency:

  • Common: Headache, nausea, diarrhea;
  • Uncommon: Dizziness, sleep disorders, abdominal pain, dry mouth, vomiting, flatulence, constipation, elevated liver enzymes, itchy rash, skin rash, fatigue, weakness, feeling unwell;
  • Rare: hypersensitivity reactions, possibly even anaphylactic shock, blurred vision, astigmatism, depression, muscle pain, joint pain, hives, increased blood lipids, weight changes, increased bilirubin and body temperature, angioedema, peripheral edema, gynecomastia;
  • Very rare: Thrombocytopenia, disorientation. In addition, some other side effects may also occur due to Pantonix 40mg such as convulsions, hallucinations, hyponatremia, jaundice, damaged liver cells, interstitial nephritis, photosensitivity, erythema on the skin, Lyell's syndrome and Stevens-Johnson syndrome.

4. Precautions when taking Pantonix 40

Precautions when taking Pantonix 40:

  • Pantonix 40mg is contraindicated in individuals with hypersensitivity to any of its components, as well as in pregnant and breastfeeding women.
  • Patients with liver impairment require monitoring of liver enzymes during treatment.
  • Before using the drug, the patient should undergo an endoscopic diagnosis to rule out malignant tumors in the esophagus and stomach. The use of Pantonix 40 may mask symptoms of other gastric pathologies, thus delaying the diagnosis and detection;
  • Co-administration of Pantonix 40mg with drugs whose absorption is pH-dependent may alter their absorption.
  • Using this medication with proton pump inhibitors may decrease its absorption and effectiveness.

Pantonix 40mg is prescribed for conditions caused by excess stomach acid secretion, such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), erosive esophagitis, and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. It is also used to prevent the recurrence of gastrointestinal ulcers. Patients should use this medication exactly as prescribed by their doctor to ensure safety and effectiveness.
