Question
Hello doctor,
I often experience headaches, dizziness, and frequent insomnia. Recently, when the headaches become severe, I sometimes feel a blockage in my throat. When I try to spit it, it is all fresh blood, although I do not cough, have a fever, or feel pain in any other part of my body. I have visited ENT doctors and participated in an endoscopy of the esophagus and stomach, but no abnormalities were found. Doctor, can you tell me what causes headaches accompanied by coughing up blood? Which department should I visit, or what tests or diagnostic procedures should I undergo? Thank you, doctor.

Hello,
With the question “What causes headaches accompanied by coughing up blood?”, I would like to answer as follows:
In your case, headaches and coughing up blood may be two separate conditions. The simultaneous occurrence of headaches and coughing up blood could be coincidental. Thus, the causes of these two conditions may differ, and so would the treatments. In some cases, there may be a connection between these two, such as sinusitis or rhinitis. These could cause both headaches and bleeding down the throat, leading to coughing up blood. In such cases, the patient may also have symptoms of nasal or sinus issues such as sneezing or nasal and throat discomfort.
Another possible reason is high blood pressure. In cases of hypertension, patients may experience nosebleeds and headaches. Typically, the blood flows from the nose, but in some cases, it may flow down to the throat, causing coughing up blood. Other potential causes of coughing up blood from the respiratory tract include pulmonary tuberculosis, bronchiectasis, or lung tumors, as well as blood originating from the esophagus or digestive tract.
Regardless of the cause, coughing up fresh blood requires screening to identify the root causes. This allows for early detection and treatment to prevent health issues caused by late diagnosis. You should visit a hospital for a direct consultation and engage in para-clinical examinations.
If you have further concerns about headaches accompanied by coughing up blood, you can visit a hospital within the Vinmec Healthcare System for additional check-ups and advice. Thank you for trusting and sending your question to Vinmec. Wishing you good health.
Sincerely!
