In cases where both maternal and fetal health parameters are optimal, doctors often recommend vaginal delivery due to it allows for a quicker recovery and reduces the need for medications that might impact breastfeeding. What should pregnant women take for an easier delivery?

1. When is vaginal delivery indicated?

Doctors usually recommend vaginal birth if the following conditions are met to ensure the best health for both mother and baby:

  • A healthy pregnancy: The mother should be in good health during the pregnancy. If she has certain medical conditions such as blood clotting disorders or preeclampsia, a C-section may be the safer option.
  • Unobstructed birth canal: Vaginal delivery can only happen smoothly if there are no obstructions in the way. If the mother has tumors or an unfavorable placental position, a cesarean section may be performed instead.
  • Optimal fetal health: A healthy fetus is important for successful passage through the birth canal. If the baby presents with complications such as umbilical cord knots, nuchal cord (cord around the neck), or cord prolapse, a caesarean section is advised.
  • Standard fetal weight: If the baby’s weight is appropriate with the mother’s body size, vaginal delivery is more likely to be safe and successful. However, in cases of excessive birth weight, vaginal delivery may present obstetric challenges, and caesarean birth may be a safer alternative.
  • Favorable biparietal diameter (BPD) and cervical dilation: A larger head circumference can make it difficult for the fetus to pass through the cervix. Additionally, if the cervix does not open wide enough, vaginal delivery is not an option. That’s why during prenatal checkups, doctors evaluate both fetal head size and cervical dilation to determine whether vaginal birth or cesarean section is the safer option.
  • Optimal fetal presentation: If the fetus is in a transverse or breech presentation, vaginal delivery is not possible, and a cesarean section is required.

2. Advantages and disadvantages of vaginal delivery

Before discussing about ways to make labor and delivery easier, it’s important to understand the advantages and disadvantages of vaginal delivery:

2.1 Advantages

  • Faster maternal recovery: Within 1–2 days after birth, mothers can usually move around and resume light activities.
  • The uterus contracts more efficiently, leading to expel postpartum discharge faster and reduce blood loss.
  • Vaginal delivery is associated with a reduced risk of bladder injury, deep vein thrombosis…
  • Mothers who deliver vaginally typically experience earlier milk production compared to those who have cesarean delivery. Early breastfeeding also stimulates neonatal growth and immune system development.
  • Enhanced neonatal immune response: During vaginal birth, the newborn is exposed to beneficial maternal microbiota, which helps stimulate the immune system. Additionally, the pressure of passing through the birth canal helps clear lung fluid, leading to better breathing compared to C-section babies.

2.2 Disadvantages

  • Extended labor duration can cause significant maternal fatigue, and in some cases, a cesarean section may be required.
  • The estimated due date may not align with the actual delivery date, leading to maternal anxiety and uncertainty.
  • Vaginal delivery can weaken the pelvic floor muscles, leading to temporary urinary leakage after birth.
  • In some cases, doctors may need to use obstetric interventions to facilitate a safe delivery.

3. How can pregnant women make labor and delivery easier?

Many pregnant women and their families often seek guidance on optimizing labor outcomes. The following recommendations help to promote a safer and smoother vaginal delivery.

3.1 Building a healthy exercise routine during pregnancy

Developing a regular physical activity routine is an important strategy for facilitating childbirth. Regular movement helps both the mother and baby stay healthy and allows the body to adjust to pregnancy changes while building endurance for labor.

Studies demonstrate that pregnant women who exercise for around 30 minutes a day may experience less bone pain and gradual muscle relaxation, making labor quicker, less painful, and less exhausting. That’s why expectant mothers need to develop good exercise habits throughout pregnancy.

Exercise options for pregnant women:

  • Swimming
  • Kegel exercises
  • Yoga, which relieves pressure in the back, chest, shoulders, and hips
  • Thigh-strengthening exercises to prepare the legs for the physical demands of childbirth
  • Walking for 30–60 minutes daily to improve circulation, ease constipation, manage blood pressure, and support an easier vaginal birth
  • Squats to help widen the pelvis, encourage the baby to move into position, and strengthen the legs for labor

3.2 Reducing stress

Psychological stress is common during pregnancy. However, maintaining emotional stability and minimizing stress is important for maternal and fetal health. High levels of psychological stress can make labor more difficult

Negative emotions during pregnancy can transmit stress signals to the fetus, potentially affect brain development and even lead to poor fetal growth. High stress levels may also increase the risk of pregnancy complications, such as preeclampsia and infections.

To reduce stress and make labor easier, pregnant women can try relaxation techniques such as meditation and listening to their favorite music. Additionally, emotional support from family members is important—offering care, encouragement, and reassurance can help mothers feel more relaxed and prepared for childbirth.

3.3 Healthy eating during pregnancy

Eating a nutrient-rich and well-balanced diet helps ensure both mother and baby stay healthy. A proper prenatal nutritional plan should include:

  • Dark green vegetables packed with essential nutrients.
  • Healthy carbs and proteins like whole grains, seafood, and lean meats.
  • Plenty of fresh fruits are good for getting important vitamins and minerals.
  • Including iron-rich sources
  • Moderate seafood intake
  • Limiting processed foods, sugary snacks, and high-sugar beverages

In the last months of pregnancy, certain foods and drinks may naturally help prepare the body for labor, based on traditional remedies:

  • Basil leaf water: Drinking basil leaf water during the third trimester may help promote labor. To prepare, blend a handful of basil leaves with 300ml of water and add a small amount of sugar for taste.
  • Sweet potato leaves: Throughout pregnancy, consuming sweet potato leaves regularly can provide essential fiber and vitamins, helping to prevent constipation. In the final weeks of pregnancy, this vegetable may promote cervical softening, potentially shortening labor duration and facilitating vaginal delivery. Additionally, postpartum consumption is believed to enhance lactation.
  • Black sesame sweet soup: From the 8th month of pregnancy (week 34–35), pregnant women can consume black sesame sweet soup to aid vaginal delivery. It can be prepared with arrowroot powder and eaten with crullers, limited to one bowl per serving.
  • Eggplant consumption: In the final month of pregnancy, eating eggplant may help improve cervical elasticity, facilitating a smoother labor process.
  • Pineapple intake: Starting from the 39th week of pregnancy, eating or drinking pineapple juice can promote labor. Pineapple contains bromelain, an enzyme that may stimulate contractions and soften the cervix. Other fruits containing bromelain include mango and papaya.
  • Perilla leaf tea: If labor signs have not appeared one week before the expected due date, drinking perilla leaf tea may help accelerate the process. To prepare, blend a handful of perilla leaves with water and consume approximately 500ml daily. Traditionally, perilla leaves are believed to soften and dilate the cervix, making vaginal delivery easier.
  • Warm coconut water: At the onset of labor contractions, drinking warm coconut water and consuming a boiled egg may help the cervix dilate more quickly, promoting a smoother delivery.
  • Carbohydrate and sugar-rich foods: Eating starchy or sugary foods can help sustain your energy levels during labor.

To promote a successful vaginal delivery, pregnant woman should consider the following dietary and lifestyle adjustments:

  • Weight management: Avoid excessive eating, as excessive weight gain can lead to complications and may increase the need for a cesarean section.
  • Hydration during labor: If experiencing thirst during labor, request medical assistance to ensure proper hydration.
  • Spicy foods and thermogenic effects: While some believe spicy foods help warm the body and aid natural delivery, they may also cause heartburn, indigestion, or diarrhea in some women, who should be cautious and adjust their diet accordingly.

3.4 Correct breathing

Learning how to breathe properly is important for labor. Pregnant women should start practicing deep breathing during pregnancy to improve oxygen flow, stay calm, and manage pain more effectively when giving birth.

During pregnancy, women can attend prenatal classes where obstetricians provide guidance on proper breathing techniques and pushing methods. This makes labor easier and safer for both mother and baby.

3.5 Other considerations

For an easier delivery, both the pregnant woman and her family should consider the following:

  • Gently massaging the belly during labor may help speed up contractions and support a smoother birth process.
  • Learning the correct pushing technique: Doctors or midwives will guide the mother through pushing effectively in sync with contractions to ensure a faster and safer birth.
  • Epidural anesthesia: This regional anesthesia technique helps relieve pain in the lower half of the body while allowing the mother to remain aware of uterine contractions. It can be an effective option for a more comfortable vaginal delivery.
  • Have your husband or family member present in the delivery room: This can help reduce maternal stress during childbirth.
  • Take a warm bath: It may help relieve pain and discomfort during labor. However, avoid overly hot water, as it could harm the baby. If the amniotic sac has ruptured, taking a hot bath is not advised, and the mother should proceed to the hospital immediately.

Understanding these key considerations can help pregnant women determine the best ways to take for an easier delivery. It is important to maintain a balanced diet, regular physical activity, sufficient rest, along with attending regular prenatal check-ups.
