Salonpas pain relief is one of the most commonly used medications today, helping patients relieve pain, especially in musculoskeletal areas such as shoulder stiffness and back pain. However, patients need to understand the different forms of Salonpas and important precautions to avoid unwanted side effects.
1. Salonpas Pain Relief
Salonpas pain relief is a medication that helps reduce pain, muscle fatigue, shoulder stiffness, and symptoms of back pain, bruises, or arthritis. It contains Methyl Salicylate 10% combined with Menthol 3% and belongs to the group of non-narcotic analgesics and antipyretics.
Methyl Salicylate, also known as Salicylic acid methyl ester, is a naturally occurring compound extracted from various plants with analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties. It is commonly found in medicinal oils used for headaches, mosquito bites, or nasal congestion. Products containing Methyl Salicylate are classified as over-the-counter (OTC) medications, making them widely used. However, Methyl Salicylate may cause skin congestion (redness or irritation). Therefore, it should only be applied externally for massage and should not be ingested or used on open wounds. People allergic to Aspirin or Salicylates should avoid using products containing Methyl Salicylate.
Additionally, prolonged inhalation of Methyl Salicylate from medicated oils at high concentrations can potentially harm the respiratory system, causing dryness and irritation of the nasal and throat mucosa.
2. What Forms Does Salonpas Come In?
Salonpas pain relief is available in two main forms:
- Pain relief patches containing Methyl Salicylate 10% and Menthol 3%
- Topical gel in 30g and 15g tubes
The dosage of Salonpas pain relief varies between adults and children:
- For adults: Salonpas pain relief patches can be applied 3 – 4 times per day to the painful area. The patch should not remain on the skin for more than 8 hours.
- For children:
- Above 12 years old: The dosage is similar to adults—3 – 4 patches per day, with a maximum wear time of 8 hours.
- Below 12 years old: Salonpas should only be used under a doctor's supervision in specific cases.

3. Important Precautions When Using Salonpas
It is crucial to follow these precautions when using Salonpas:
- Do not apply Salonpas pain relief patches or gel to areas with signs of infection, such as swelling, heat, redness, or pain. This is because Salonpas has a vasodilatory effect, increasing blood flow to the infected area, which may worsen inflammation and cause further swelling.
- Salonpas is highly effective when used after injuries or trauma to soft tissues around the joints, such as sprains, dislocations, and ligament strains, which cause swelling and bruising.
- Do not use Salonpas on broken skin. For example, if a patient has bursitis or other conditions causing abrasions on the skin, applying Salonpas may damage underlying tissues, leading to ulceration or necrosis of newly formed cells in the affected area.
- Avoid applying Salonpas to sensitive areas, such as the skin around the eyes and mucous membranes.
- Do not use Salonpas over large areas of skin or for longer than recommended, especially in children, as this can increase the risk of Salicylate toxicity.
- Monitor for possible side effects, including burning sensation, tingling, hypersensitivity reactions, Salicylate toxicity, angioedema, or even bronchospasm (airway constriction).
- Certain individuals should consult a doctor before using Salonpas, including: pregnant or breastfeeding women, people with drug allergies, patients taking medications such as warfarin, individuals with conditions like asthma or nasal polyps, patients preparing for surgery.

According to multiple studies, Salonpas pain relief may interact with certain medications, including:
- Warfarin
- Varicella (chickenpox) vaccine
- Allopurinol
- Febuxostat
- Pegloticase
- Probenecid
Salonpas pain relief may also interact with certain foods, alcoholic beverages, and tobacco products. To minimize unwanted effects, consider the following precautions:
- Only apply externally as a patch or gel.
- Consult a doctor before use if you are taking other medications or have underlying health conditions.
- Do not apply the patch too tightly, as this may affect circulation.
- Immediately discontinue use and seek medical attention if any unusual symptoms occur.
- Keep out of reach of children. If a child accidentally ingests Salonpas, seek emergency medical care immediately.
Salonpas pain relief is widely used today, primarily for musculoskeletal pain relief. However, despite being an external-use medication, it can still cause adverse effects that may impact health. Therefore, patients should exercise caution and consult a doctor before use rather than self-medicating.
