By June 2023, when the Vinmec Cardiology team visited Vinh Long General Hospital, the health of Mrs. Thach Thi Bonl (56 years old, of Khmer ethnicity) was very weak. She had a history of heart failure and mitral valve regurgitation and had undergone a biological valve replacement 12 years ago, leaving her in a fragile condition. Due to financial difficulties, she had not been able to undergo another surgery. Fortunately, Vinh Long General Hospital doctors arranged for Mrs. Bonl to be examined by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Van Phan during the Vinmec team’s visit. This opportunity enabled her to undergo valve replacement surgery with Assoc. Prof. Phan, and her health has now greatly improved, with an optimistic spirit. Mrs. Bonl feels as if she has been given a second chance at life.
Mrs. Bonl was one of nearly ten cardiovascular patients examined by Vinmec doctors during the June 2023 visit to Vinh Long. Subsequently, these patients were referred for surgery at Vinmec Central Park International General Hospital. Notably, some heart surgery cases involved underprivileged patients and ethnic minorities, who received financial support for their operations.
From June to November 2023, Vinmec Central Park Cardiology Center doctors conducted two rounds of patient examinations in Vinh Long. Through effective collaboration between cardiologists from Vinh Long General Hospital and Vinmec, 300 residents and patients from Vinh Long and neighboring provinces underwent cardiovascular check-ups and screenings. As a result, many cases of cardiovascular disease were detected in a timely manner, with immediate consultation and treatment plans provided during the examination or referrals for surgery at Vinmec Central Park (Ho Chi Minh City).
Within the framework of this program, Vinmec doctors also held sessions to exchange experiences in cardiovascular treatment with colleagues in Vinh Long. The new techniques shared during these scientific seminars represent the latest interventions and heart surgery procedures. Vinmec is among the few hospitals in Vietnam to pioneer and achieve significant success in these areas.
Prof. Dr. Vo Thanh Nhan, Director of Vinmec Central Park Cardiology Center, shared about the transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) technique. This advanced cardiac intervention is one in which Prof. Nhan is both a training specialist and the only independent practitioner officially recognized in Vietnam. Since 2017, Prof. Vo Thanh Nhan has performed over 100 TAVI procedures with a success rate exceeding 95%. His experience in TAVI is considered comparable to leading experts in Southeast Asia.
Doctors from Vinh Long General Hospital also had the opportunity to discuss atrial fibrillation surgery with Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Van Phan, Deputy Director of Vinmec Central Park Cardiology Center. Assoc. Prof. Phan is one of Vietnam’s top specialists in radiofrequency ablation for atrial fibrillation. Additionally, during the seminar, Dr. Huynh Hoang Khang, with over 20 years of experience in heart surgery, shared techniques for off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting.
Recently, Vinmec Central Park Cardiology Center has regularly engaged in collaborative exchanges to support provincial doctors and healthcare staff in the Mekong Delta and Southeast regions, providing them greater access to advanced treatment methods.
