As part of this visit, Vinmec and Can Tho doctors also shared expertise at a scientific conference on recent advances in cardiology, orthopedics, and neurosurgery.
The seminar featured leading specialists from the Vinmec Healthcare System, including:
- Prof. Dr. Vo Thanh Nhan – Director, Cardiology Center, Vinmec Central Park
- Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Van Phan – Deputy Director, Cardiology Center, Vinmec Central Park
- Dr. Tran Hoang Ngoc Anh – Head of Neurosurgery, Vinmec Central Park
- Prof. Dr. Tran Trung Dung – Director, Orthopedics & Sports Medicine Center, Vinmec Times City
- MSc. Tran Duc Thanh – Surgeon, Bone and Soft Tissue Tumors, Orthopedics & Sports Medicine Center, Vinmec Times City
At the conference, Prof. Vo Thanh Nhan presented on transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) – a highly complex interventional cardiology technique currently performed in only three major centers nationwide. Vinmec Central Park’s Cardiology Center has successfully carried out over 100 TAVI procedures, making it the leading hospital in Vietnam for this technique. TAVI is especially suitable for elderly patients with complex comorbidities, offering advantages such as no need for general anesthesia, minimal invasiveness, and reduced complications.
Assoc. Prof. Nguyen Van Phan shared insights on mitral valve repair – one of the most challenging surgical techniques in cardiac surgery, in which he is recognized as a leading surgeon in Vietnam.
Cardiology experts from Vinmec Central Park also introduced the Heart Team model, a multidisciplinary approach in patient diagnosis and treatment. This model ensures optimal care by involving close collaboration among various specialties for each case. Expressing interest in this model, Dr. Lai Van Nong, Director of Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital, voiced his aspiration to adopt a similar approach with support from Vinmec specialists.
In orthopedics, MSc. Tran Duc Thanh reported on new treatment trends for bone cancer, emphasizing limb-salvage therapy to improve patients’ quality of life. Prof. Tran Trung Dung introduced the application of 3D printing technology in bone cancer surgery, which attracted significant attention from participants. This advanced technology is being researched and applied at VinUni’s 3D Medical Technology Research Center and Vinmec’s Orthopedics & Sports Medicine Center.
The final session focused on neurosurgery, where Dr. Tran Hoang Ngoc Anh discussed intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring (IONM) in functional brain tumor surgery. This technique combines real-time brainwave monitoring via electrodes placed directly on the dura, cortex, and subcortical regions, enabling surgeons to preserve vital functional brain areas during tumor resection and thereby minimize postoperative motor or language deficits.
For many years, Vinmec specialists have regularly collaborated with hospitals across Vietnam, combining professional exchanges with free community health screenings. These activities not only create opportunities to share the latest treatment trends but also provide local residents with early disease detection and timely interventions for better treatment outcomes.
