If I am taking thyroid and cardiac medication, can I take Omega 3 fish oil?

Question

May I ask, my uncle is 50 years old, currently taking thyroid and cardiac medication, can he take Omega 3 fish oil at the same time? I hope the doctor can provide an answer soon. Thank you very much, doctor.

Answer

Hello. Omega-3 fatty acids are one of the types of fats that are very beneficial for the body; they help reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases, depression, memory loss, and improve vision… However, the human body does not produce omega-3 fatty acids on its own, so it is necessary to supplement omega-3 in a reasonable manner through foods, fish oil, etc.
Fish oil contains two types of omega-3: docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). If you are taking thyroid and cardiac medication, you can still take fish oil supplements for Omega 3. However, to ensure that Omega 3 supplementation is effective and safe, your uncle needs to consult with the doctors treating his thyroid and cardiovascular conditions, as there are many Omega 3 supplement products on the market, each containing different levels of EPA and DHA.
