- Over-the-counter fiber supplements or stool softeners: If your mother can consume more fiber in her diet, adding over-the-counter fiber supplements like Metamucil or Citrucel may be necessary. However, when using these supplements, she should drink at least about 1 liter of water daily for optimal effectiveness.
