Nexium Mups 20mg contains esomeprazole as its main active ingredient, which acts as a proton pump inhibitor (PPI). It is prescribed for patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and peptic ulcers caused by NSAID use. Additionally, this medication helps prevent re-bleeding after endoscopic treatment for acute gastric ulcer bleeding and is used for gastric acid suppression when oral therapy is insufficient.
1. Uses of Nexium Mups 20mg
Nexium Mups 20mg is indicated for the treatment of the following conditions:
Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD):
- Treats erosive esophagitis caused by acid reflux.
- Long-term treatment for patients with healed esophagitis to prevent recurrence.
- Symptomatic treatment for GERD.
Eradication of Helicobacter pylori:
- Used in combination with an appropriate antibiotic regimen to eliminate H. pylori and treat H. pylori-associated duodenal ulcers.
- Prevents recurrence of peptic ulcers in patients with H. pylori infection.

2. Should Nexium Mups 20mg Be Taken Before or After Meals?
Nexium Mups 20mg should be taken approximately 1 hour before a main meal, as this is the optimal time for the medication to work effectively. Take the medication with a full glass of water. It’s appropriate to use boiled and cooled water as an alternative, but avoid taking it with carbonated or alcoholic beverages such as soda, beer, or wine.
Taking Nexium Mups 20mg one hour before eating allows the active ingredients to dissolve in the gastric mucosa, maximizing its effects. However, the medication does not provide immediate relief. Instead, it gradually reduces symptoms such as heartburn, burning sensation in the stomach, and acid reflux after meals.
For best results, take Nexium Mups 20mg daily at the prescribed dosage. Consistent use helps improve symptoms of gastritis, acid reflux, and stomach ulcers effectively.
3. Dosage of Nexium Mups 20mg
3.1. How to Take Nexium Mups 20mg
Nexium Mups 20mg is taken orally. Swallow the whole tablet with water. Do not chew or crush the tablet.
For individuals who have difficulty swallowing, the tablet can be dispersed in half a glass of non-carbonated water. Do not mix with other liquids, as this may disrupt the enteric coating designed for intestinal absorption. Stir until the tablet completely disperses, then drink the suspension immediately or within 30 minutes. Rinse the glass with half a glass of water and drink to ensure the full dose is taken.
3.2. Dosage of Nexium Mups 20mg
Adults & Adolescents (12 years and older) for GERD treatment:
• Treatment of erosive esophagitis caused by acid reflux: 40mg per day (2 tablets of Nexium Mups 20mg) for 4 weeks. If healing is incomplete or symptoms persist, continue treatment for another 4 weeks.
• Long-term maintenance therapy to prevent recurrence of esophagitis: 20mg per day (1 tablet of Nexium Mups 20mg per day).
• Symptomatic treatment of GERD (without esophagitis): 20mg per day (1 tablet of Nexium Mups 20mg). If symptoms persist after 4 weeks, further clinical evaluation may be required to confirm the diagnosis.
Combination Therapy for Helicobacter Pylori Eradication:
• Treatment of Helicobacter pylori-associated duodenal ulcers: Nexium Mups 20mg, Amoxicillin 1g, and Clarithromycin 500mg – all taken twice daily for 7 days.
• Prevention of recurrence in patients with Helicobacter pylori-associated ulcers: Nexium Mups 20mg, Amoxicillin 1g, and Clarithromycin 500mg – all taken twice daily for 7 days.
Patients with Renal Impairment:
• No dosage adjustment is required for patients with renal impairment.
• However, caution should be exercised in patients with severe renal disease due to limited clinical data.
Patients with Liver Impairment:
• No dosage adjustment is required for mild to moderate liver impairment.
• For severe liver impairment, the maximum dose should not exceed Nexium Mups 20mg per day.

3.3. Important Considerations When Taking Nexium Mups 20mg
• Overdose:
A dose of 280mg may cause gastrointestinal symptoms and fatigue. Currently, there is no specific antidote for esomeprazole overdose. Since esomeprazole binds strongly to plasma proteins, dialysis is not effective for drug removal. Treatment involves symptomatic management and supportive care as directed by a physician.
• Missed Dose:
Take the missed dose as soon as possible. However, if it is close to the next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with the regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed dose.
4. Precautions When Using Nexium Mups 20mg
Contraindications for Nexium Mups 20mg:
• History of allergy or hypersensitivity to esomeprazole, the benzimidazole class, or any other ingredients of the medication.
• Do not use Nexium Mups 20mg concurrently with nelfinavir or atazanavir.
Patients undergoing long-term treatment with Nexium Mups 20mg (especially over one year) should have regular medical check-ups. If any unusual symptoms occur during treatment, inform the doctor immediately.
Nexium Mups 20mg contains sucrose and is not suitable for individuals with genetic conditions such as: Fructose intolerance, Glucose-galactose malabsorption, Sucrase-isomaltase deficiency.
Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), including Nexium Mups 20mg, can reduce vitamin B12 absorption by lowering stomach acid levels. Individuals with low vitamin B12 stores or risk factors for B12 deficiency should carefully consider long-term use.
Long-term, high-dose use of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) (especially over one year) may slightly increase the risk of fractures in the hip, wrist, and spine. This risk is higher in elderly patients or those with other risk factors for osteoporosis. Elderly patients at risk of osteoporosis should follow current clinical guidelines and ensure adequate calcium and vitamin D intake.
Effects on Driving and Operating Machinery: Nexium Mups 20mg has little impact on driving or operating machinery. However, some rare side effects such as: Dizziness (uncommon), Blurred vision (rare) could occur. If these occur, avoid driving or operating heavy machinery.
Use During Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: There are no sufficient studies on the use of Nexium Mups 20mg in pregnant or breastfeeding women. Consult your doctor before taking this medication to weigh the benefits and risks.
