Is sleepiness during pregnancy a sign of having a boy or a girl?

According to Specialist Level I, MD Pham Thi Yen from Vinmec Hai Phong, sleepiness during pregnancy is a condition where pregnant women frequently feel drowsy and want to sleep anywhere and at any time of the day.

Sleepiness is often common in the first trimester of pregnancy, causing pregnant women to feel fatigued and wanting to sleep everywhere. They may need to sleep for 10-12 hours a day to achieve the best mental state.

The cause of sleepiness can be attributed to hormonal changes during pregnancy, specifically the increased levels of progesterone and beta HCG in the blood, which lead to this condition. As they enter the third trimester, the anxiety of impending childbirth can cause stress and fatigue, resulting in insomnia at night and a desire to sleep during the day.

Specialist Level I, MD Pham Thi Yen believes that sleepiness is a normal physiological phenomenon during pregnancy and is not related to the sex of the fetus. Therefore, the opinions suggesting that sleepiness is a sign of carrying a boy or a girl are completely inaccurate. Pregnant women who want to know the sex of their baby accurately should have regular check-ups, ultrasounds, or genetic testing.

Sleepiness in the first trimester is usually not too severe. However, spending too much time in bed can limit physical activity, increasing the risk of osteoporosis after childbirth. Lying in bed for extended periods can lead to fatigue, lack of flexibility, and more dangerously, it can cause venous thrombosis that may travel to the lungs, leading to pulmonary embolism.

Sleepiness in the third trimester poses more risks and dangers. According to some studies, pregnant women who sleep for more than 9 hours without waking up have a higher risk of stillbirth. To mitigate the risks associated with sleepiness, pregnant women should set an alarm before going to sleep and should move around for 5-10 minutes after waking up.
