Uses of Nizoral Cream 10g

Table of content

Nizoral cream is a topical antifungal medication indicated for the treatment of superficial fungal infections. This article provides an overview of its uses, dosage, potential side effects, and precautions for safe application.

1. Uses of Nizoral Cream 10g

Nizoral cream is a topical antifungal medication containing Ketoconazole 2% (each gram of cream contains 20 mg of ketoconazole). It is available in 10g and 5g formulations.

Ketoconazole is a synthetic imidazole dioxolane derivative with fungicidal or fungistatic activity. At lower concentrations, it inhibits fungal growth, whereas at higher doses, it eliminates fungal cells. Its mechanism of action involves inhibiting ergosterol biosynthesis, which alters the lipid composition of the fungal cell membrane, ultimately preventing fungal proliferation.

Nizoral cream 10g is used in the following conditions:

  • Topical treatment of fungal infections: Applied externally for fungal infections of the body, groin, hands, and feet caused by Trichophyton rubrum, Trichophyton mentagrophytes, Microsporum canis, and Epidermophyton floccosum.
  • Treatment of cutaneous candidiasis and pityriasis versicolor (tinea versicolor).
  • Management of seborrheic dermatitis, a skin disorder associated with Malassezia furfur overgrowth.

2. Dosage and Administration

How to apply: Before application, cleanse and dry the affected area. Apply a thin layer of the antifungal cream to the infected skin and the surrounding areas, then wash hands thoroughly to prevent spreading the infection to other body parts or other individuals.

Dosage for Adults:

  • Fungal infections of the body, groin, hands, and pityriasis versicolor: Apply once daily to the affected area and surrounding skin. The usual treatment duration is 3 to 4 weeks for body infections and 2 to 3 weeks for groin, hand, and pityriasis versicolor infections.
  • Tinea pedis (athlete’s foot): Apply once a day to the fungal infection area and surrounding skin areas for 4 to 6 weeks, or apply twice a day for 1 week.
  • Seborrheic dermatitis: Apply once or twice daily to the affected area, depending on the severity. The typical treatment duration is 2 to 4 weeks, with maintenance therapy once or twice weekly.

Treatment should continue for a few days after symptoms have completely resolved to prevent recurrence.

3. Side Effects of Nizoral Cream 10g

While using Nizoral cream, some individuals may experience the following side effects:

  • Uncommon reactions: Skin warmth, burning sensation, itching, or redness at the application site.
  • Rare reactions: Hypersensitivity reactions, including rash, blistering, contact dermatitis, eczema, or urticaria.

4. Precautions for Using Nizoral Cream 10g

To ensure safe usage, consider the following precautions:

  • Inform your doctor or pharmacist if you have a history of allergies to ketoconazole or any other component of the cream.
  • For pregnant women, there is currently insufficient evidence regarding the safety of this medication in this population; therefore, its use is not recommended. It is essential to consult a physician and carefully weigh the potential risks to the fetus before administration. Similarly, breastfeeding women should also exercise caution and seek medical advice prior to use.
  • Excessive application of the medication on the skin may increase the risk of adverse reactions, such as erythema, edema, and a burning sensation. These symptoms typically subside once the medication is discontinued.
  • Do not use it in individuals with a known hypersensitivity to any ingredient in Nizoral cream.
  • Avoid contact with the eyes, this cream is intended for external use only.
  • If using this medication alongside topical corticosteroids, to prevent rebound symptoms when discontinuing prolonged corticosteroid therapy, it is recommended to apply a mild corticosteroid in the morning and Nizoral cream 2% in the evening. Gradually taper the corticosteroid application over 2 to 3 weeks before stopping completely.
  • Do not use expired medication and discard the tube one month after opening.
