1. Gentrisone: Description and Uses

Gentrisone's active ingredients are Betamethasone dipropionate, Clotrimazole, and Gentamicin sulfate. It's a topical antibacterial cream containing corticosteroids, with excipients including: Stearyl alcohol, Cetanol, Propylene glycol, light mineral oil, Propylparaben, and purified water, etc...

1.1. How Gentrisone works

Gentrisone is a topical cream that works by synthesizing anti-inflammatory proteins. It inhibits the synthesis of inflammatory mediators and suppresses the growth of fungi and bacteria. Due to its potent antibacterial properties, it is indicated for the treatment of various dermatoses such as: infected dermatitis, dermatomycoses, atopic eczema, contact dermatitis, etc…

Moreover, Gentrisone topical application is also efficacious in managing tinea cruris, tinea pedis, and pityriasis versicolor due to Malassezia furfur.

1.2. Gentrisone application for skin

Gentrisone is a topical ointment for external use. Before application, cleanse the affected skin with saline solution and gently pat it dry with sterile gauze. Apply a thin, even layer of the ointment to the affected area. Use it once or twice daily, or as prescribed by your physician.

Treatment typically lasts for 3-5 days. It's important for pregnant women to avoid using Gentrisone for extended periods.

2. Can Gentrisone be used during pregnancy?

Is Gentrisone safe for pregnant women? Currently, there are no comprehensive studies specifically determining the risks of using Gentrisone for pregnant and breastfeeding women. However, to ensure absolute safety when using Gentrisone,  pregnant women should consult with medical specialists.

In addition, pregnant women should also research the safety of the active ingredients in Gentrisone before use:

  • Topical application of Betamethasone dipropionate (0.05%) is generally associated with minimal risk to both the mother and the developing fetus.
  • Clotrimazole (1%) exhibits minimal systemic absorption following topical application.
  • There is no evidence to suggest that Clotrimazole use is harmful to fetal development.
While the teratogenic potential of Gentamicin sulfate (0.1%) is reported to be low, the possibility of idiosyncratic reactions to this component should be considered.

While there's no conclusive research showing direct harm to the fetus from these three components, it’s still important for pregnant women to exercise caution when considering this medication. If you're pregnant and experiencing skin problems, consulting a healthcare professional is the safest course of action. Self-medication can affect fetal development and worsen the course of the disease.

3. What precautions should be taken when using Gentrisone ointment?

Although this is only a topical medication, in the case of pregnancy and breastfeeding, the medication should be used according to a doctor's prescription to ensure safety. In case pregnant women are allergic to any ingredient of Gentrisone topical medication, they should not use Gentrisone without consulting a doctor.

In addition, pregnant women should also be aware that Gentrisone may change the activity or side effects of some other medications they are using. To prevent drug interactions, it's strongly recommended that you discuss all medications you are currently using with your doctor for appropriate guidance.

Some studies suggest that Gentrisone can interact with certain medications, including Aminoglycosides,  Cephaloridine, Cisplatin, as well as alcohol, tobacco, and birth control pills. Therefore, pregnant women should consult their doctors before using it to minimize complications.
