Valdoxan is a medication containing Agomelatine 25mg formulated as film-coated tablets, indicated for treating depression in adults. Additionally, Valdoxan 25mg is contraindicated in people with agomelatine allergy, patients with liver failure, or patients currently taking fluvoxamine or ciprofloxacin.
1. Dosage and instructions for using Valdoxan 25mg
For depression patients starting treatment, doctors will prescribe a dosage of 25mg daily at bedtime.
After two weeks of treatment, if the depression patient shows no improvement in symptoms, the dose can be increased to 50mg/day/time, meaning two 25mg tablets, still maintaining the administration time before sleep.
When prescribing increased doses of Valdoxan 25mg, the physician needs to consider the risk of increased transaminase, as well as whether the patient's actual liver function can tolerate the dose increase. Liver function tests must be performed before patients begin treatment and before any intended dose increase. Doctors should not initiate treatment if transaminase exceeds 3 times the upper limit of normal range.
Depression patients need to be treated with Valdoxan 25mg for at least 6 months to ensure symptoms are absent. Valdoxan can be taken with or without food.
2. Special Considerations When Using Valdoxan
- Elderly: Valdoxan 25-50mg is completely effective and safe for elderly depression patients aged 75 and above.
- Kidney failure: Caution is needed when using Valdoxan for patients with severe or moderate kidney failure.
- Valdoxan is contraindicated in patients with liver failure.
- Children: Valdoxan should not be used in infants up to 2 years old to treat stages of childhood depression.
Pregnant women and breastfeeding women need detailed medical consultation when using this medication.
3. Side Effects of Valdoxan
Patients using Valdoxan 25mg may experience side effects such as weight gain, fatigue, liver issues, nausea, headache, anxiety. These side effects will disappear when the medication is stopped. If there are other, rare side effects, patients should immediately inform their doctor for guidance.
4. Management of Overdose and Missed Doses
In cases where patients show dangerous symptoms of overdose, immediately call the nearest medical facility for appropriate emergency treatment. Family members should provide complete information about the medications the patient is using.
If a patient misses a dose, take it as soon as possible, or can take it 1-2 hours different from the doctor-prescribed time. If the time is close to the next dose, skip the missed dose and take the next dose as scheduled. Importantly, patients should not to take a double dose to make up for the missed dose.
