Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a condition characterized by pain, numbness, or tingling in the fingers and hand, which may radiate up the forearm or arm. This syndrome is common in women during late pregnancy and after childbirth.

1. Causes of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome During and After Pregnancy
Women are three times more likely than men to develop carpal tunnel syndrome. The condition can result from internal causes such as prolonged increased pressure within the wrist or external causes such as wrist fractures or tumors compressing the median nerve. Since women generally have smaller wrists than men, they are more prone to nerve and muscle compression in the wrist area.
During pregnancy, women may experience tingling, itching, or pain in the hands - often due to carpal tunnel syndrome, which is relatively common among expectant mothers.
Carpal tunnel syndrome in pregnant women usually appears during the second or third trimester. If it develops during a first pregnancy, it may recur in subsequent ones. After childbirth, the condition may persist or even worsen.
The main cause of CTS in pregnant women is fluid retention. Increased fluid accumulation in the wrist elevates pressure within the carpal tunnel, compressing the median nerve. This leads to discomfort, especially upon waking, as sleeping positions (e.g., placing the hand under the cheek or using the arm as a pillow) may restrict blood flow.
Risk factors include:
- Multiple pregnancy (twins, triplets)
- Being overweight before pregnancy
- Family or personal history of spine, neck, or shoulder problems (e.g., herniated discs or cervical nerve compression)
- Rapid weight gain during pregnancy
- Swelling and inflammation caused by conditions like rheumatoid arthritis or wrist fractures, which narrow the carpal tunnel
- Some cases occur without identifiable causes
2. Symptoms of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Carpal tunnel syndrome during pregnancy causes pain and numbness in the thumb, index finger, and middle finger, resulting from compression of the median nerve.
In some cases, pain may radiate to the hand, wrist, or forearm.
Symptoms often worsen at night, leading to sleep disturbances. In more severe cases, symptoms can also occur during the day.
Over time, pain and numbness may cause hand weakness, affecting fine motor skills and daily activities.
3. Treatment of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome During and After Pregnancy
Carpal tunnel syndrome during pregnancy can cause significant discomfort. To relieve symptoms, pregnant women can try the following methods:
- Take breaks from repetitive hand activities: Whether performing light or heavy tasks, take short breaks to shake out or stretch the hands and wrists, improving blood flow.
- Wrist splints: Use wrist splints to stabilize the wrist during repetitive activities or at night to reduce pain.
- Keep hands warm: Maintaining warmth can help relieve pain caused by nerve compression.
- Massage therapy: Gently massage the wrist in circular motions to improve circulation. Stretch the arm and hand carefully, but avoid excessive force to prevent further injury.
- Herbal remedies: Drinking chamomile tea or other mild herbal infusions may help reduce inflammation and promote relaxation. However, excessive use should be avoided, as it may worsen insomnia.
4. Prevention of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome During Pregnancy
To prevent carpal tunnel syndrome, pregnant women should maintain a balanced diet and stable weight:
- Limit salt, fats, and sugars.
- Eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, and drink adequate water.
- Increase intake of vitamin B6-rich foods such as avocado, garlic, sesame, sunflower seeds, lean meat, dark green vegetables, mackerel, tuna, and salmon to strengthen nerve health.
- Keep the wrist in a neutral and relaxed position.
- Take frequent short breaks when performing tasks requiring repetitive hand use.
Carpal tunnel syndrome can cause numbness and pain that significantly affect pregnant and postpartum women. At the first sign of symptoms, it is important to seek medical evaluation and treatment promptly to prevent long-term nerve damage.
