Noscapin is an alkaloid drug that acts on the respiratory system. It is commonly used to treat dry coughs without phlegm. Although side effects are rare with Noscapin, patients should still be cautious and consult a doctor before using this medication.
1. Uses of Noscapin
Noscapin primarily works as a cough suppressant through its receptor agonist activity. It reduces coughing by acting on the cough center in the brainstem without causing respiratory depression or addiction at the therapeutic dose. Noscapin is typically prescribed for treating dry cough and is contraindicated in the following cases:
• Children under 30 months old, respiratory failure, cough due to asthma, or combined use with both agonist and antagonist morphine medications
• Patients allergic to Noscapin or any of its ingredients
2. Dosage of Noscapin
The dosage of Noscapin varies depending on the patient and treatment goals, as follows:
For Adults:
• The oral dosage can be up to 50 mg three times a day
• Take it approximately 1 hour before meals
• If the cough persists for more than 2 weeks, consult a doctor for further evaluation
For Children:
• Infants over 6 months and under 3 years: 7.5 mg twice a day
• Children aged 3-12 years: 25 mg three times a day
• Children over 12 years: Use the adult dosage
3. Side effects of Noscapin
Some patients may experience the following side effects when using Noscapin:
• Constipation
• Headache, drowsiness
• Dyspnea, chest pain
• Respiratory disorders
• Abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting
• Urticaria, itching
• Swelling of the face and neck (Angioedema)
• Dizziness, bronchospasm
• Skin allergic reactions
• Nervous system disorders
• Severe abdominal, chest or back pain resembling cramps
4. Precautions when using Noscapin
Some precautions when using Noscapin include:
• Do not use Noscapin with expectorants or mucolytics. It is essential to understand the cause of the cough before using medication for specific treatment.
• If the usual dose of the cough suppressant is ineffective, do not increase the dose.
• Using Noscapin may increase the risk of intracranial hemorrhage due to hypertension.
• Using Noscapin with morphine agonists and antagonists may reduce its effectiveness due to receptor competition and increase the risk of withdrawal syndrome; therefore, simultaneous use is contraindicated.
• Elderly patients may experience respiratory failure when using Noscapin.
• In case of an overdose, symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, dizziness, confusion, agitation, even coma, respiratory failure, and seizures may occur.
Common drug interactions with Noscapin:
• CNS depressants may enhance sedative effects, making it dangerous to drive or operate machinery.
• Combining Noscapin with morphine agonists and antagonists may reduce its effectiveness due to receptor competition.
• Noscapin may increase the anticoagulant effect of Warfarin, so caution is advised when using them together.
